One of my recent patients has truly become an inspiration. He underwent about 7.5 cm of femoral lengthening, and in just 4.5 months, he’s already walking with crutches and beginning to bear weight.
While his recovery may be faster than average, it highlights the importance of collaboration between the patient, surgeon, and care team to ensure the surgery is as safe and predictable as possible.
This patient has an exceptional ability to generate new bone, which allowed us to start weight-bearing early and get him moving sooner. Before long, he’ll be walking without crutches or any assistance.
Though this pace isn’t typical for every patient, I’m incredibly proud that we create an environment where some patients surpass all expectations, walking early and doing so safely.
