A Mini-Symposium on Osseointegration

We hosted a focused mini-symposium on the principles of bone-anchored prostheses for amputees, marking an important step in our ongoing commitment to advancing patient care.

The day began with an intensive training session for our dedicated multidisciplinary team, providing a strong foundation ahead of the symposium. Presented by the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology, the event brought together a specialised group of professionals from across the Western Cape—uniting clinicians, surgeons, therapists, and rehabilitation experts from various corners of the province.

The symposium wasn’t just theoretical. A key highlight was the practical, hands-on element that allowed participants to apply concepts and engage directly with tools and techniques related to osseointegration. This real-world application added depth and value to the learning experience, reinforcing best practices and encouraging collaborative problem-solving.

The event was made possible thanks to the continued support of our local distributor, Ortho-Xact (PTY) LTD, and our international partners at the Osseointegration Center Rotterdam. We were pleased to welcome Dr Oscar van Waes (MD, PhD – Erasmus MC | Rijndam Revalidatie), along with Frans Verhaegh, the engineer behind many of the innovations presented. Their contributions added significant clinical and technical insight to the day.

Bringing together diverse expertise, shared purpose, and hands-on experience, the symposium highlighted the power of collaboration in pushing forward the boundaries of amputee care in South Africa.
