Our second osseointegration was a successful femoral osseointegration. This procedure involved anchoring a skeletal implant directly into the femur, enabling the attachment of a custom-designed prosthetic limb.

The procedure was performed at Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital in partnership with Dr. Oscar van Waes, MD, PhD from Erasmus MC.

Following surgery, the patient entered a tailored rehabilitation programme under Lenka Uys at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport. Their work focused on progressive loading, muscular reconditioning, and functional gait training. All of these are essential to long-term success with femoral integration.

Fitting the prosthesis required close collaboration. Tom Langenhuyzen, a highly experienced prosthetist from the Netherlands, worked directly with the patient’s trusted prosthetist, Wayne Kearns. Together, they approached the complex task of aligning and configuring the prosthesis with meticulous attention to the biomechanics of femoral integration. Their combined expertise ensured the final fit was both precise and functional.

Femoral osseointegration is not on the horizon. It is already here, and it is changing lives.
