Osseointegration, cutting-edge technology transforming lives
Osseointegration
The prefect candid:
- Has had an amputation for a period of time.
- Experiences significant socket problems.
- Is quite active or aspires to be active.
- The amputation resulted from trauma, not vascular impairment or infection.
- Psychologically stable with minimal comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, vascular impairment).
- Non-smoker and maintains a relatively healthy lifestyle.

I am thrilled to share exciting news with our patient community and fellow healthcare providers about the rapidly advancing field of amputation care. It’s important to shift our perspective—amputation isn’t just about losing a limb; it’s about restoring functionality and offering patients a renewed sense of life. One groundbreaking development in this space is the bone-anchored prosthesis, also known as osseointegration, a technique revolutionizing how prosthetics are attached.
Traditionally, prosthetic limbs have been fitted using a socket, essentially a suction mechanism to attach the limb to the amputated segment. However, with the bone-anchored prosthesis, an implant is inserted directly into the bone, allowing the prosthetic limb to be attached efficiently. This approach eliminates many of the discomforts associated with socket systems and provides patients with enhanced sensory feedback, allowing them to feel the ground more securely while walking.
The technology, originally developed in Scandinavia for dental implants, uses titanium-based implants that integrate with bone tissue. This concept has now been adapted for amputation care, creating a strong and reliable foundation for attaching artificial limbs. It’s a game-changer for many amputees, drastically improving functionality and quality of life.
I am particularly excited to announce that we are collaborating with renowned teams in the Netherlands and Germany to bring this transformative technology to South Africa. By 2025, we aim to introduce an advanced osseointegration system here. Currently, we are conducting thorough testing and preparing our surgical and care teams to ensure the highest standard of patient care. Through this collaboration with experienced European surgeons, we are committed to delivering this life-changing solution to patients across South Africa and beyond.
